今日のテーマは「TV or YouTube?」です。

I have been teaching English for almost 18 years and for the past few years I have really noticed a shift in the way children consume media. It has entered into the classroom especially when we are studying hobbies.

私は約18年間英語を教えて来ています、そしてここ2～3年で子供たちのメディアとの付き合い方が変わってきたのを感じています。

 In the past, I have asked the students in the free talking portion: “What is your favourite movie or TV show? Who is your favourite actor?” This past week,  I asked these questions in one of my Junior High School classes. I was so surprised because they could not name any tv show or popular actor that they liked! It appears that this generation does not watch tv anymore so there has been a significant change in pop culture as a result. 

過去において私は生徒様達にフリートークでこう聞いてきました。「あなたの好きなテレビ番組は何ですか？あなたのお気に入りの俳優は誰ですか？」と。先週、私の担当する中学生クラスでこれらの質問をしましたが、私はすごく驚きました。なぜなら皆さん誰もテレビ番組の名前や好きな人気俳優の名前を言わなかったからです。ポップカルチャーの驚くべき変化の結果として、明らかにこの年代の人たちはテレビを見なくなったです。

Instead, I had to ask them: “Who is your favourite Youtuber?” Then all students could easily explain who they liked and why. It was the first time in my career that I had to ask such a question! Times certainly are changing!  We even had a chance to watch a bit of each Youtuber that they liked. It was a special chance for me to get to understand my students better and we had a lot of fun. 

代わりに私はこう尋ねました。「誰がお気に入りのユーチューバーですか？」と。全員が直ぐに誰が好きでなぜなのかを説明してくれました。その時が私の長い経験の中でそのような質問をしたのは初めてでした。時代は確実に変化しています。私たちは少し、彼らがお気に入りのユーチューバーのチャンネルを見る時間がありました。それは私にとって私の生徒様達を理解し、楽しむ貴重な機会でした。

There are many short videos to help the students study English as well so I recommended some videos to the students. If they are watching Youtube anyways, let’s try to make some of it educational. It is important for us as teachers and parents to stay on top of the current trends.

たくさんの英語を勉強できるショートビデオがありますので私は生徒様達に紹介しました。もし、YouTubeを見るなら教育的なものを見るようにしましょう！英語講師や保護者様達にとっても現在のトレンドの最先端を知ることは重要です。

 Next time you talk with your kids, be sure to ask them “Who is your favourite Youtuber?” 

次は皆さんがご自身のお子様に聞いてください。「誰がお気に入りのユーチューバーなの？」と。
